The Truth About Youth Tobacco Use

July 30, 2026

My name is David De La Garza, and I am a junior at John Marshall High School in Oklahoma City. Youth tobacco use is a far more sinister and destructive problem than many people realize. It’s my mission to show that the Youth Action for Health Leadership (YAHL) CounterAct Tobacco campaign can help change that.

High schools, middle schools and even elementary schools are all affected by dangerous and addictive substances such as nicotine in vapes and tobacco products. These products are harmful on their own. However, when paired with misinformation, ignorance or peer pressure, they can quickly become life-altering. The mental well-being of someone who becomes addicted to these substances can spiral into unhealthy habits and depression. Academic performance declines, physical health suffers and, on top of everything else, addiction is expensive.

CounterAct Tobacco educates, protects and empowers young people by informing them about the harmful consequences of becoming addicted to vaping, nicotine and tobacco.

The campaign teaches students to avoid addictive substances, educate others about these dangers and build leadership skills through CounterAct's many opportunities to make a difference for Oklahoma’s youth today and in the future.

Classroom presentations, staff meetings, presentations to school leaders and many other opportunities become possible for anyone who joins CounterAct Tobacco. Through my own experiences presenting to hospitals, school staff and organizations that have since become our partners, I’ve seen how eager people are to hear directly from Oklahoma’s youth about the issues that affect them. Our voices can and have changed Oklahoma for the better. Join CounterAct Tobacco with YAHL and help fight for a healthier future!
